Nave, chancel and crossing are all one space in this church by the architect S S Teulon, a "low church" plan despite the often prickly Gothic detail often associated with churches built for the Anglo-Catholic and Tractarian movements. Teulon was one of the most prominent and best-connected low-church architects of the period and his churches usually have such open plans. He was approached by Troth Jenkyns, widow of Dr Richard Jenkyns, dean of Wells cathedral, to design the church her husband had determined to build in the poor east end of the town. It was completed in 1857 and has lent its name to the street previously known as East Wells. Troth herself died soon afterwards, reportedly from an illness contracted after catching a chill at the consecration ceremony.

An interesting approach at St Thomas's church - set in a fairly small amount of ground. This Garden of Remembrance features a lot of metal plaques of the departed.

A view upwards of the nineteenth century church steeple. St Thomas's was founded by Dean Jenkyns' widow, Troth. After several years of service to the many poor and needy people of the area by her husband, she enlisted the celebrated Victorian architect S.S. Teulon to design a fitting church. Troth laid the foundation stone but, according to reports, caught a chill doing so. Three years later it was finally finished but sadly she too passed away by then. Chancel and apse.

St Thomas was built as a mission church to the east end of Wells, honouring the intention of the Dean of Wells Dr Richard Jenkyns, who did not live to see it completed in 1857. The lively carving of the capitals must be a nod to those in the nave of Wells cathedral.

The church name shown on a board facing St Thomas Street is The Church of St Thomas Wells With Horrington. Part of the Church of England Diocese of Bath & Wells, the mid 19th century building was Grade II (star) listed in 1972.
