Wells features [2]
Market Place has been the focal point of the city for centuries and currently there is a twice weekly market. Penniless Porch and the Bishop's Eye, two medieval gateways enclose Market Place. All the building seen here are listed. There is a commemorative plaque and markings on the pavement showing the distance jumped by Mary Rand, a resident of the City, who achieved a world record in the long jump at the 1964 Olympic Games. A Roman settlement around three wells that became much more important when the Anglo-Saxon King Ine of Wessex founded a minster church in 704, Wells is the second smallest city in England.

A section of pavement has been inlaid with the distance jumped by Mary Rand in 1964. The World Record was broken by this local girl in Tokyo and has been publicly celebrated near the Market Place, near the Bishop's Palace. See Image] for the descriptive inscription.
