Benchmark on the Globe Inn, Newton St Loe
This example is trying to hide behind a drainpipe, but there's no mistaking the mark as being part of the original levelling of 1848-9. It runs from Gloucester to London, via Bristol and Bath to name a couple of places, and is listed as number 163 in the abstracts: http://www.deformedweb.co.uk/trigs/data/1GL/1GLA_049.png See the Benchmark Database for more information: http://www.bench-marks.org.uk/bm37069 See also Image] for an evening view of the inn.

The Globe, Newton St Loe
An evening shot of this 17th century inn, fronting onto the junction of the main A4 Bath Road and A39. The village of Newton St Loe had a colliery named after the inn, and is owned by the Duchy of Cornwall; in fact, the combined manors of Newton and nearby Englishcombe form the biggest estate outside Dartmoor. Note there is a 1GL benchmark underneath a drainpipe at the left of this image - see Image

Or more accurately just off the roundabout on the A4 near Newton St. Loe. They take hygiene very seriously here, for some good advice see http://www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/bath/foodsafetynews2.htm

The Globe and its roundabout
The Globe pub https://www.vintageinn.co.uk/restaurants/south-west/theglobenewtonsaintloe (in whose car park this photo was taken) is a familiar sight to anyone who travels along the A4 between Bristol and Bath. The roundabout outside is at the western end of a short stretch of dual carriageway, and seems to do its job pretty efficiently. Perhaps rather less so at the moment as there are some road works on the westbound carriageway which are affecting it.

2008 : Roundabout at Newton St. Loe
The Globe Inn is behind us, the first exit to the left is the A39, proceeding clockwise, always a good idea, we come to the A4 going to Keynsham and Bristol, then the other exit for the A4 going to Bath and last a secondary road going south of Bath. The hill in the background is the southern part of Lansdown.
