St James in late afternoon light
The ancient church is believed to date from the twelfth century, although altered in the fifteenth and (almost inevitably) reworked in Victorian times. The village itself has a long history that perhaps reaches to 961 in a document called 'De Sudstoca', in that the lands are recognised and rights transferred from the Monastery of St Peter in Bath to a Saxon named Totta. Some historians think the village must be even older.
