Canal tunnel under Sydney Road
The canal was constructed through Sydney Gardens between 1800 and 1810, and Cleveland House, which is over the tunnel, was built soon afterwards as the canal company's headquarters. There was, and probably still is, a hole in the roof of the tunnel near the western exit where packages could be dropped to passing boats as a mail service to other parts of the canal. Railway bridge with benchmark
Sydney Road, Bath. Passing underneath the road are the railway (nearest) and the canal (further up by the building). Along this stretch are two benchmarks, and a strange third mark. See Image]
