Turnpike marker
A well-maintained cast iron turnpike marker on the Lower Bristol Road. The marker actually shows the boundary of local parishes - something important for the toll road. The date of 1827 is one of several Acts of Parliament passed to allow them. See Image] for a wider view.

Former drill hall, Lower Bristol Rd
In World War 1 this was the drill hall of the 4th Battalion, Somerset Light Infantry (HQ, A & B Companies). It does not appear to be in use for any purpose now. [2018 update: not long after this photograph was taken, the building was demolished and a dull-looking block of student accommodation was put in its place.]

The arched window
The north end of the old drill hall at the corner of Brougham Hayes and the Lower Bristol Road features (for the time being) a characteristic half moon window. Sadly the old hall is being demolished - see Image] for more.

Open plan and open space
The old drill hall was later used for various purposes after the war. The local police traffic unit used it but it is now being knocked down. See Image] for another look in.

Peering over the hoardings
The fencing around the old drill hall kept people off the premises for a number of years but is now keeping the public out as it is being demolished. See Image] for another look at the distinctive glazing and http://www.geograph.org.uk/article/WW1-Great-War-Centenary---Drill-Halls for the Drill Hall collection.
