Another new name for an old face
The red-brick front is Georgian in style although the building opened in December 1934 as The Gaumont Palace. Before this it had been the site of the old Palace Theatre, which ran from 1913-33. In 1967, the Gaumont was sold by the Rank Organisation to the Classic Cinema chain; Bingo sessions were also held here and proved fairly popular. That didn't stop it changing names as a Vogue Bingo club, then a Mecca Bingo and finally a Top Ten Bingo hall. However, it eventually closed in 2009 but has since been reborn as a night-club, opening in the following year. Intriguingly, it is in Stars Lane - which was here long before the stars of the silver screen; it was also opposite Mars House, which survived only until the twentieth century.
