Street buildings [1]
The rear vehicular entrance to the Clarks factory complex. The village of Street is situated at the end of the Polden Hills on a dry spot in the Somerset Levels. There is evidence of Roman settlement. In the mid 17th century, the Society of Friends was established in Street and one of the Quaker families who settled here were the Clarks. In 1825 James Clark began the production of slippers and later shoes and boots. The business flourished under his son, William, but profits were ploughed back into employee welfare, housing and education. Much of the housing in the centre of Street was built by the company.

One of the estate houses built by Clarks, the shoe manufacturer that dominates Street. The houses are all built with this attractive light Mendip stone and have ornate features including carved name panels like this one. The house is seen here Image]

The Limes 1892
One of the houses built by Clarks for their workers. This must have been a senior manager's house as it is quite large and adjacent to the main factory entrance. A close up of the name and date panel is here Image]

Former Clark's shoe factory
This is the former C & J Clark factory that is now the company headquarters. Shoes are no longer manufactured in Street. There is still a large surviving complex, part of which has been turned into an 'outlet' shopping village that is hugely popular.

Who's for a ride? - Clarks Village Street
Near the centre of the village is a grassy area for children with a merry-go-round. It was late afternoon and no-one to be seen but the lights make a pretty picture.
