Street houses [14]
Number 46 High Street was formerly a house and shop now a private dwelling. The early 19th century house and the forecourt wall of upright slabs is listed, grade II, with details at: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1176111 The village of Street is situated at the end of the Polden Hills on a dry spot in the Somerset Levels. There is evidence of Roman settlement. In the mid 17th century, the Society of Friends was established in Street and one of the Quaker families who settled here were the Clarks. In 1825 James Clark began the production of slippers and later shoes and boots. The business flourished under his son, William, but profits were ploughed back into employee welfare, housing and education. Much of the housing in the centre of the Street was built by the company.

A less significant entrance to the shopping village. Despite the signs I cannot bring myself to write the name without an apostrophe.

Street Telephone Exchange (2)
Located at 71 High Street, this TE dates from 1962, this being indicated by the EIIR cipher on the building to the right of the photo. At one time, it was also occupied by a Post Office, which has since moved along to 85 High Street to be located within a shop. Now a firm of bookmakers occupies the ground floor, an unusual combination for the TE which is above it. A KX100 telephone kiosk can be seen to the left of the photo.
