2007 : Village Stocks, Hilperton
Village stocks were used in medieval times as a form of punishment for minor offenders. Generally they were used to humiliate the victim and people were only allowed to throw soft material.
There's many a miscreant today who would benefit from a spell, but remember, soft material only.

Number 208 Devizes Road is a former toll house. Built in ashlar with a stone tile roof. The road through Hilperton, from Trowbridge to Semington, was turnpiked by the Trowbridge Roads in 1751. The single storey toll house was built to collect tolls from the users. The turnpike closed in 1870 and the house was sold. A second storey was added later.
Hilperton is a residential village adjacent to the northern suburbs of Trowbridge and is only some 1¼ miles north of Trowbridge town centre. Although the village was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, little is known of its history until the 19th century when home-based cloth weaving was a major source of employment. The village was astride the A361 road but is now by-passed.
