The Circus
Palladian masterpiece of John Wood senior begun 1754, completed 1768 by his son John Wood the younger, after his father's death in 1754. Three equal crescents of large segmental townhouses face three entrances, around a central circular space, originally paved with setts covering a reservoir. The three principal storeys rise through Doric, Ionic and Corinthian pilasters with lavishly decorated friezes of symbols, animals and devices.

The Circus, Bath
The Circus was designed by John Wood, supposedly based on the colosseum in Rome, with the foundation stone laid in 1754; the work was however completed by his son, also John, after the death of the older man. It can be said to represent the sun with the better-known Royal Crescent, a short distance away, representing the moon. This view is taken from the end of Bennett Street.

1-15 Rivers Street, Bath
Another product of John Wood the Younger's office. This group dates from c1770. The first four are unusual in having tripartite windows; the rest are more conventional (e.g. Image]). Some good pedimented doorcases in evidence. Grade II listed.

16-26 Rivers Street, Bath
Much of the eastern terrace on the north side of the street, designed by John Wood the Younger from 1770. Characteristic three-bay houses, here all accorded a pedimented Doric doorcase. Grade II listed.

The Circus, Bath
Looking from the grassed centre of the Circus to the corner of Bennett Street. When the Circus was built in the mid 18th century, this area was cobbled. One of Bath's 100 King Bladud's pigs looks on.

View across The Circus, Bath
A benchmark (as listed in the Database http://www.bench-marks.org.uk/bm38548 ), discretely sited at the corner of a house adjoining the junction with Bennett Street. The elegant arc of the northern side of The Circus forms the background.
