Not a metal plate, but what appears to be a ceramic plate housed in a glass-fronted box on the wall of the old rectory. The words Deverill Pottery might be made out, along with a date of 1976 possibly.

The former rectory in Brixton Deverill was built in seventeenth century and also served for a time as a schoolroom before ending its role in the 1970s. Now a Grade II listed private residence, it sits beside a telephone box - with a real telephone! On the wall is an old AA road sign and a plate in a glass-fronted box. Old AA Sign on the west facing gable end of the Grade II Listed early C19 former schoolroom and reading room on the east side of the B3095 in Brixton Deverill, 5 miles northeast of Mere. Brixton Deverill parish. This is circular, but not quite conforming to the other two circular styles, showing distances Kingston Deverill 1½ Longbridge Deverill 1½ London 99¼. There were five series of AA signs, mostly dating from 1923 and made by Francis & Co / Franco in Deptford, London. The village name and distance to London were usually displayed. In 1935, the Post Office commissioned a new kiosk from Sir Giles Gilbert Scott to celebrate the Jubilee of King George V. The K6 Jubilee Kiosk, as it is known, was similar to the K2 box, being made of cast iron and painted red but was 25% lighter in weight. By the end of the 1930s there were 20,000 K6 telephone boxes in use all over the UK. There is an old Automobile Association sign on the gable end of the building.

The church dates from perhaps the thirteenth century but has had a couple of major renovations since. The first was (unusually) in 1760 or thereabouts, and the second in 1862. In 1852 the rector William Barnes added a spire but that has deteriorated so badly that it had to be taken down again in 1899. A benchmark can be found at the foot of the west end here - see Image

An inscription on the top of St Michael's church tower marks what appears to have been work done on it in the past. The tower was indeed renovated in 1730 and 1862.

A carved face on the west end of St Michael's church has a slight turn to the right, unusually.

The shady canopy belies the river's crisp and clear waters.
