New timber doors
Buckland Dinham's old lock-up appears to have been in use in the latter part of the eighteenth century until the early nineteenth. Today it no longer holds the occasional drunk, but the timbers look fairly modern, with some of the ironmongery possibly older.

The village lock-up
Like many places, Buckland Dinham had a little problem with unruly inhabitants - often thanks to over-imbibing the local juice. In order to re-establish some law and order small cells were built to hold them until they sobered up. They are often called lock-ups or blind houses - due to not having any windows! They served the community until the introduction of a robust police force and system in the nineteenth century.
Many old lock-ups are now either derelict, re-used or even demolished.

Don't look up!

Beware small children
The Cross becomes a private road as it runs alongside the church. Someone clearly has safety in mind by putting up this somewhat dated and undersized sign.
