Sign for the Vine Tree, Frome
The vine was formerly far more common as a pub name than it is today, though it is still well represented. It is sometimes a heraldic reference to the Worshipful Company of Distillers (1638) whose arms show a vine bearing grapes, but the sign was already being used in the fourteenth century.
