Grand Union Canal by Star City, Birmingham
There is safe visitor mooring for about five boats here on the non-towpath side of the Grand Union Canal (formerly the Birmingham and Warwick Junction Canal - opened in 1844 to reduce the number of locks involved in connecting with the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal about four hundred metres ahead). Access through the locked gate into the Star City complex requires a BWB boater's key. Don't stop here if you fancy a few pints in a local pub. They've all closed or sell no real ale.

Grand Union Canal by Star City, Birmingham
This was originally the Birmingham and Warwick Junction Canal, which meets the Tame Valley Canal and the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal about 250 metres beyond the disused Nechells Shallow Lock (No 64), seen in the image.

Nechells Shallow Lock near Star City, Birmingham
Salford Bridge Lock. This stop lock, No 64 on the Grand Union Canal (formerly Birmingham and Warwick Junction Canal) no longer has gates fitted, as it serves no purpose. Originally it would have been built to prevent the canal "stealing" water from the older Birmingham and Fazeley Canal, which continues behind the camera. 1995 image with gates Image]
