Smethwick Library, High Street
According to the website of Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council, this building was originally built in 1866 as a public hall. It has also been used as an employment exchange. The conversion to library purposes in the 1920's included the installation of an attractive stained glass window. The building was extensively renovated in 1984, and it now includes the Community History & Archives Service.

Blue Gates Hotel (1), 100 High Street
Although the present building was built in 1932, there were two earlier inns on the same site, with the same name. The earliest of these was in existence by the late 18th century. The site is opposite where there used to be a toll-gate, and it is thought the name may have come from the colour of the barrier. Image

The large and impressive Blue Gates Hotel dates from 1932, but is built on the site of earlier inns of the same name. It is on the corner of High Street and Stony Lane. Now a free house, it was at one time a Mitchell & Butlers house, and their name etc. is carved into a stone above the main door. Blue Gates Hotel
The present Blue Gates Hotel on Smethwick High Street was built in the 1930s on the site of an earlier hotel of the same name. Nearby used to be a toll house (the toll house building still stands Image) on the Birmingham to Wolverhampton turnpike road and it is thought the name Blue Gates originated from gates on the road, however, it is thought more likely that the name comes from Blue Gates Farm which was here before the land was developed. Reputedly in 1965 when Malcolm X visited Smethwick he visited this hotel, just nine days before he was assassinated in the USA.

Smethwick High Street as seen from the railway
From the railway (on a grey autumn afternoon), traffic on Tollhouse Way partly obscures the buildings on Smethwick High Street, the north side of which has largely been cleared to make way for the dual carriageway. Smethwick Library peeps into shot on the left, whilst the cream building on the left is a surviving toll-house. The DPD lorry probably originates from the nearby depot in Oldbury.
