Canal and railway near Smethwick, Sandwell
Looking north-west towards Sandwell and Wolverhampton, this is the Birmingham Canal Navigations New Main Line, engineered by Thomas Telford and mostly completed 1824-1827. One of his improvements was to have towpaths on both sides of the water. The railway bridge carries the line between Smethwick Rolfe Street and Birmingham New Street stations on the Rugby-Birmingham-Stafford Line.
