Emerging from Gosty Hill tunnel
The lofty tunnel cross-section here is not typical of most of the tunnel. This has a much reduced bore, and there is an abrupt step in height part-way through.

Remains of the tug house, northern portal, Gosty Hill Tunnel
From 1913 to the 1930s a motor tug was moored here. It had a propeller at each end and pulled boats through in either direction, without turning round. Before 1913 horse-drawn boats had to be legged through the tunnel, as there is no towpath.

Gosty Hill Tunnel
Looking from Gosty Hill bridge towards the northern portal of this 577 yard tunnel. Tunnels, of which several lengthy ones were built on the Black Country canal network, were traditionally a major operating inconvenience as few were built with towpaths. The horses were led across the top of the hill and the boats legged through the tunnel - an arduous and dangerous task. Towards the end of the era of horse drawn boats some tunnels were provided with tugs, and the mooring provision for the tug can be seen here.
