Looking from Gosty Hill bridge towards the northern portal of this 577 yard tunnel. Tunnels, of which several lengthy ones were built on the Black Country canal network, were traditionally a major operating inconvenience as few were built with towpaths. The horses were led across the top of the hill and the boats legged through the tunnel - an arduous and dangerous task. Towards the end of the era of horse drawn boats some tunnels were provided with tugs, and the mooring provision for the tug can be seen here.
