British Steel - private property
This battered old sign at the end of Stewarts Road is just about the only visible reminder that this was the site of a large steel tube works that closed in the 1980s. The Coombs Wood Works was originally opened in 1860 and for most of its working life was operated by Stewarts and Lloyds Ltd. It became part of the British Steel Corporation on nationalisation in 1968, and there is a reminder here of that organisation's stylised 'S' logo. Far from being private, the path here is marked as a public footpath.

Footpath to Mucklow Hill
The public footpath sign clearly indicates the way leading from here at the end of Stewarts Road to Mucklow Hill but the battered old British Steel sign - complete with logo - states 'Private Property Trespassers will be Prosecuted'. The latter is in fact a surprising survivor from the time when this was the site of a vast steel tubes works. First opened in 1860, the works became a part of Stewarts & Lloyds Ltd before being nationalised in 1968. It eventually closed in the 1980s, a period when much of the UK's heavy industry disappeared. British Steel itself no longer exists, the remaining operations now being run by Tata, an Indian company.
