Welwyn Garden City station, 1992
View southward from the footbridge, towards London King's Cross on the ECML (ex-GNR London - Doncaster section). This station had evolved from being a Halt on the ex-GNR branch from Hatfield to Luton and Dunstable to become a substantial modern station to serve the new Garden City and opened in September 1926. By 1992 it had lost its branch services to Hertford North (6/51, goods 5/66) and to Dunstable via Luton (4/65, goods by 5/71), along with a minor marshalling yard here. Subsequently however, by 1992 the main line had been electrified, as far as Hitchin in 1977, and the station facilities improved - albeit incorporated into the Howard Shopping Centre.
