Up ECML coal train at Woolmer Green Box, near Knebworth
View northward, towards Hitchin and the North: ex-GN ECML. One of the countless coal trains up from New England Yards at Peterborough is being threaded through the Woolmer Green - Welwyn North two-track bottle-neck. The locomotive is headed by ex-WD 'Austerity' 2-8-0 No. 90288. This engine was built in 12/43 and loaned to the LNER at Tyne Dock, moving to the GWR at Ebbw Junction in 1/44 until sent to the Continent in 2/45: it was returned in 1947, being allocated to March LNE in 12/47; under BR it became No. 90288, working from New England and lasted until 12/62.

Oaklands: Robbery Bottom Lane viaduct
The Great Northern Railway had to go to phenomenal civil engineering lengths to build their main line north out of London across Hertfordshire. In this stretch the railway dives into tunnels under hills and spans valleys with viaducts on a regular basis. Although on a much smaller scale lengthwise to Image] which is about 2 kilometres away to the south, this viaduct over Robbery Bottom Lane is of a similar height and obviously built to the same elegant design. It dates from around 1850.

All messed up and no place to go
A delivery of power equipment for Network Rail in Robbery Bottom Lane has gone a bit awry. The six wheel lorry is unable to climb the incline as the driven wheels are being lifted clear of the ground. The driver cannot reverse back safely so they will have to wait for assistance. In the meantime the road is blocked. Behind is the viaduct carrying the Kings Cross to Edinburgh main line.

Mobile mast on farmland
To the north of Robbery Bottom Road, a mobile phone mast, with its associated equipment, has been sited adjacent to a bridleway. A screen of young trees has been planted to reduce the visual impact in the future.
