As you can see from the road names these are along the old A1, now the B197 since the motorway was built.

Northern air shaft above Welwyn North tunnel
In 1866, three goods trains collided in the tunnel below and resulted in a huge conflagration, the flames of which reached well into the sky through the air-shafts.
