Viewed in the opposite direction to Image this whole area was developed after the Second World War, with the Ordnance Survey map of 1939 still showing a patchwork of fields.

St Albans: The Ridgeway, Marshalswick
The warning signs are for motorists approaching Sandringham School. The reason for the apparent abrupt end of the cycle lane here is a mystery known only to those who design such things, as there is no material change in the road beyond here.

Marshalswick from Nashes Farm
The picture show a farm building on Nashes Farm, with the northern part of Marshalswick beyond. Marshalswick was a large house which was demolished in the early 20th century, and the name now applies to a large area of housing developed in the 20th century.
