St Albans: Hixberry Lane
Hixberry Lane is an example of a Byway Open to All Traffic (a BOAT) where access is permitted for pedestrians, cyclists and motor vehicles. A BOAT is shown on the Ordnance Survey's 1:50,000 scale maps with a red dashed line with ticks opposite one another, while somewhat confusingly the same symbol is used on the 1:25,000 scale maps but in green. (A restricted byway is indicated with alternate ticks.) Hixberry Lane is an old country route that existed long before the railway (now dismantled) or the hospital (now demolished) ever came to this area.
