Smallford: A1057 Hatfield Road and Listed Milepost
The A1057 was once the A414 before that number was assigned to the parallel main road to the south. The milepost in the hedge on the left is white-painted cast iron and dates from about 1820. It is inscribed Hatfield 2 on the top, and St Albans 3 and, curiously, Reading 48 on one of the sides, indicating that this must have been an old turnpike route bypassing and running north-west of London. The milepost is Grade II Listed.
