St Albans Abbey branch, Bricket Wood
Looking towards St Albans Abbey from the end of the platform at Bricket Wood. This fascinating branch line dates from 1858 when it was completed by the London & North Western Railway providing St Albans with a railway for the first time. It came under threat in the 1960s when the Beeching report proposed closure but received a new lease of life when it was electrified in 1988. It is now served by a regular shuttle between the two towns but for operational reasons it is not possible to run through passenger trains to Euston.

Opened in 1858 by the London and North Western Railway on its line from Watford Junction to St. Albans Abbey. View south west towards Garston (Herts) and Watford Junction. There used to be a second platform to the right and a lot fewer trees - compare with Image

Bricket Wood Station
The Watford - St Albans Abbey line was opened in 1858 and is nowadays an outer suburban railway with something of the atmosphere of a country branch. Bricket Wood was once the principal intermediate station with a passing loop, but in common with all the other stations on the line has been unstaffed for many years.
