High Street, ST. ALBANS, AL2 1QL

Photographed in its very last week of operation before closure on 1 June 2011 this was London Colney's Police Station on the High Street. The station was one of four to be closed by Hertfordshire Constabulary in the implementation of a need to save £36 million over the next four years. It is planned that the Police will still maintain a presence in the village though, by working out of an office provided by Sainsbury's in Colney Fields.

Regretably since Image was taken in July this year, the pub was suddenly boarded up on Friday 15th November, 2013. It is one of some 30 listed buildings in London Colney; I hope it doesn't get knocked down! The closure also loses the community a nice hall facility (the building on the left). Further information at Image taken in 2008. March 12th 2014: Shutters removed from doors and windows and work apparently in progress inside! The pub reopened later in 2014. But I regret to say that it was suddenly closed again in January 2018. In late November 2018 planning permission was applied for to convert the pub into accommodation, the Function Room into two houses and to build flats on the garden area.

The pub and garden are being redeveloped. Planning permission was granted last year for the Function hall on the left to be made into 2 dwellings and for 7 other dwellings on the site. But the pub is to be restored as a pub! See Image for a view of the pub after it was first closed in 2014. The fencing around the site is being erected in this photo.

The hoarding facing the High Street has recently been smartened up as building operations got under way - see Image] for a view in 2012.

Just two weeks after Image] not only had the scaffolding gone up, but so had the timber frame of the ground floor - and they'd only started the day before!

Only 24 hours or so on from the last picture Image] and we have the first floor timber framework also in place.

In less than a week the complete timber frame and roof structure were in place - achieved regrettably by the sub-contractors completely ignoring the restrictions on evening, Sunday and Bank Holiday working......

The new houses have lost the scaffolding and porches are now being erected.

The virtually completed end of the new houses in Meadow Close - the end one by the High Street has been designed to face onto it rather than Meadow Close. This however has led to a rather ungainly appearance with non-symmetrically placed windows, front porch etc.; rather spoils things compared to the adjacent housing both old and newer.
