Tympanum
It's easy to fail to notice this extravagantly carved tympanum in the pediment at the top of the Image] building. It is by A Milne, and Son of Buckie, and incorporates the initials of the Caledonian Bank, for which it was originally built.

Bank of Scotland
A year ago there were three banks in Buckie, and not so long before that there were also two building societies. A couple of weeks ago the Royal Bank of Scotland abandoned all pretence of providing a service to its customers in this part of the world, and closed its Buckie branch, so the Bank of Scotland is now the only bank still left in the town. I wonder for how much longer? The building was originally the Caledonian Bank, designed by Ross and Macbeth and built in 1905-1906. It features a fine Image]

This building rates a mention in 'The Buildings of Scotland' for its scrolled Dutch gable, pediment and chimney stack. It was built in 1884, but I have yet to discover who the architect was. What a pity that the effect is marred by a tired and tacky shop front below.
