The Turra Coo
This unusual statue of a cow in Turriff's High Street commemorates a Mr Robert Paterson, a local farmer who refused to pay the new national insurance stamp in 1913. As a result a cow was taken from him and an attempt was made to auction it at Turriff. However, there was a riot in support of the farmer, and in the confusion the cow managed to escape. It was eventually recaptured and sent to Aberdeen for auction there. However, a group of Turriff farmers got together and bought the cow, returning it to its former owner. The cow was then led in a triumphal procession of 4,000 people through the streets of the town.

The Turra Coo
The Turra Coo (Doric for "the Turriff Cow") was a white Ayrshire-Shorthorn cross dairy cow which lived near the Aberdeenshire town of Turriff in north-east Scotland in the early twentieth century. The cow became famous following a dispute between her owner, supported by local people, against the government over taxes and compulsory national insurance.
