The Mounthooly Doocot, being on top of a mound, enjoys an excellent view over the surrounding farm land. This is Smithyhillock Farm.

Not quite sure why this dovecot is here. Perhaps there was a large house nearby. Can anybody help?

Mounthooley Doocot
Yet another view... The doocot, dated 1800, is A-listed (LB15909: http://portal.historicenvironment.scot/designation/LB15909 ) and seems to combine dovecote, landmark for shipping and folly...

Mounthooly Doocot
This 19th century doocot has been renovated and there is a picnic area and steps laid into the slope up to the building. Disappointingly, however, there is no information available on site. The doocot itself, offering fine views over the surrounding countryside, is firmly locked.

Mounthooly Doocot
Although universally described as a doocot, this surely looks too elaborate to be just for pigeons? It has the date 1800 above one window, but the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historic Monuments of Scotland declines to assign it to a period.
