Statue of Field -Marshal James Keith
Field-Marshal Keith was born at Inverugie Castle on the outskirts of Peterhead in 1696. Of a prominent Jacobite family he took part in both the 1715 and 1719 risings following which he went into exile on the continent. Here he served as a mercenary in the armies of Spain, Russia and finally Prussia where Frederick the Great made him a Field-Marshal. He served with distinction in the 'Seven Years War'but was shot at Hochkirk in 1758. This statue, a copy of one in Germany, was presented to the town by King William I of Prussia in 1868.

Toilets This Way
I searched in vain for a pub in Peterhead that I felt at home in on the first night of my short stay. On the second night, though, I stumbled across the Caley Bar, which was more my thing. Nothing prepared me from my trip to the toilet though. It is quite possible that the floor space in this long corridor to the toilets is bigger than the drinking area of the pub from which it leads. It's always nice to feel you're in somewhere really swanky! While it is a very nice cosy little pub, the Caley certainly isn't an exclusive upmarket nightclub, but this is the feeling you get when making the fairly long trip to the gents here.

Field Marshal Keith statue, Peterhead
James Francis Edward Keith (see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Francis_Edward_Keith ), born at Inverugie Castle near Peterhead was a Jacobite who was forced to flee the country after the '15 rebellion was suppressed. He served in the Spanish, Russian and Prussian armies and died at the battle of Hochkirch in 1758, where his heroics allowed Frederick the Great to retreat to safety. His Jacobite past was evidently forgiven by 1868 when this statue was gifted to Peterhead by the King of Prussia.
