The 2008 Salmon fishing season opens on the Spey
It's the 11th February and the opening of the Spey salmon season has arrived. The picture shows resident ghillie, Jock Royan returning the first fish of the season for the Kinermony beat. The fish is a Kelt or salmon which has successfully spawned in the last season and is now on its way back to the sea. Good luck to it!

Kelt and Kype on the Lour Burn.
This is the head of a male salmon or cock salmon which has been involved in the spawning ritual and has subsequently died. It can be recognised as a male by the curved jaws which are known as the Kype and which develop as the fish nears breeding condition. A female salmon is referred to as a hen but lacks the exaggerated kype of the cock fish.

Mission Accomplished! Spent salmon carcases on the Lour Burn.
These salmon have died post spawning on the Lour Burn which is a tributary of the River Spey at Aberlour. Not all Atlantic salmon die on spawning; a small proportion make it back to the sea. After spawning the fish is known as a Kelt.

A privileged view...
Here is a view of a fishing hut at Kinermony. It is Spartan but nevertheless offers a welcome haven to the stalwart who has been standing navel deep for the last forty minutes in the 33 or 34 degree Celsius waters of the mighty Spey.

Butterbur on the banks of the Lour Burn
The Lour Burn runs into the River Spey some 70 yards distant. That's the flower of the Butterbur plant which signals the start of Spring. Like the Winter Aconite, this plant is peculiar in that the flower precedes the leaf.
