Knockando kirkyard
The small building was originally a watch house built in the early 1800s. This was a shelter for men guarding newly buried bodies to prevent them being stolen by grave robbers to be sold to the anatomists in the medical schools in Aberdeen. The building now serves as a small, free standing chapel.

Knockando Parish Kirkyard
The yews have been neatly clipped into shapes that remind me of kettle drums. At the left end of the row is an early 19th century watch house. This was originally equipped with a table, a bible, a snuff mull, pipes and a bowl of whisky. I am sorry to report that bowl of whisky is no longer supplied. Nor are the snuff mull or the pipes; the building is now open for quiet meditation and prayer. (I am tempted to enjoy the idea of the pipes being bagpipes, but I fear they would actually have been tobacco pipes.)
