The rusty-red corrugated iron roofs of the outbuildings make a splash of colour among the trees.

Gate at Altonrea
This gate gives access to what was once a road northwards through the woods. This road, however, has almost vanished under the vegetation. Only the gap in the trees betrays its route.

Black Moss from Altonrea
On the map, the Black Moss looks like really difficult ground, because it is marked as marshy, but fortunately there is access to this corner of the square. The hill in the distance is Culblean.

Altonrea
Birch woods at Altonrea. In theory there is a track through this patch of woodland, but I could not find it with certainty, even though I was equipped with both the 1:50,000 and the 1:25,000 maps. I was told later that 'you can find it provided you know where it is'.

Newton of Mulloch
The 1:25,000 map shows a farm here, on flat land drained by several parallel ditches. The reality is that the farm has been abandoned for half a century, the drains have silted up and the land has reverted to boggy pools and wet grassland.

Newton of Mulloch
The gateway separates improved grazing behind me from the rough boggy ground around the abandoned buildings at Newton of Mulloch. On the skyline are Morven on the right and its outlier Culblean Hill at the centre.

Altonrea
The woodland beyond Altonrea is typical of Deeside - silver birches, with an understorey of bracken and tussocky grass.
