Was this perhaps an old school? The weathervane and the escutcheon (plain or defaced?) above the door suggest it was more than a 'General Store', which one local said he remembered it as.

Bridge of Alford
The houses here, sensibly, have been built well out of reach of the spate. You cane see from the bundles of grass hanging off the fence that it must have been pretty impressive when the river was high and all the low ground flooded.
