Eastgate, birthplace of Charles Murray
This photo shows the birthplace of Charles Murray at Eastgate which lies a mile to the east of Alford on Aberdeen Road. He was born here at 6.00 am on the 28th September 1864. A blue plaque, visible in the photo, commemorates that event.
In 1888, at the age of 24, Charles Murray emigrated from Aberdeen to South Africa. Here he led an adventurous life as an engineer, a gold prospector, a lieutenant in the Second Boer War and later as Deputy Inspector of Mines and the first Secretary of Public Works.
In 1920, the University of Aberdeen awarded Charles Murray with an LLD for his significant contribution to Scottish poetry. Following this, in the New Year's Honours list of 1922, he was awarded a CMG or Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George in recognition of his South African service.
