Gallow Hillock, Banchory
In the past, because it was so difficult to transport criminals to Aberdeen on roads that were mainly just dirt tracks, Lairds in the outlying districts built their own gallows and had the authority to pass appropriate sentence, the gallows were usually built on a hill near the local village, this one in Banchory was situated on a purpose built mound on open land, it is now in the grounds at the back of Ravenswood hotel and surrounded by houses.
