The blue plaque on the wall of 12 Hanbury Street says "Bud Flanagan 1896-1968, comedian and leader of The Crazy Gang born here". In fact he was born Chaim Reuben Weintrop, the son of a barber who set up shop here after leaving Poland. Bud, who spent several years in America as a young man, returned to fight in WW1 and, it is said, took the name Flanagan from the sadistic sergeant who made his life a misery: he vowed he would turn the man into a laughing stock!
