The early 19th century stables are Grade II Listed separately to the pub. The former coaching inn's name is from Thomas Bruce-Brudenell, later Earl of Ailesbury, who took possession of Tanfield Manor and its surrounding lands in 1747. In a June 2021 planning application (permitted Jan. 2022) the pub was described as 'currently closed'. The proposal was to build extensions at the rear of the main building to enlarge the kitchen and to upgrade the toilets, and to create a new car parking area on the paddock. Access to and from the car park involve provision of a new door opening to the north wall of the stables.
