The malthouse known as the "Freehold Malthouse" was owned by the Scottish born entrepreneur, Patrick Stead. The arrival of the railway in the 1850s brought even greater speed and economy. Production expanded rapidly, particularly under Patrick Stead. Thus Halesworth became known as a regional centre for the malting industry. Now converted into flats, the building, outwardly remains much as it was in 1842.
