The Customs House, Gravesend

In 1812, ships no longer had to stop at Gravesend to pick up customs officials. As a result customs officials moved from Whitehall to the present Customs House in The Terrace in 1815/16 seen here. There is a lookout room on the roof giving an unrestricted view of the Thames. The Customs and Excise Service at Gravesend is still active today.
