The garden off Murray Street was given to the town in 1916 by George Nesfield Barnett as public open space, and provided a suitable location for this First World War memorial arch which was unveiled on 21 May 1921 (almost eactly a hundred years before this photo). It is listed Grade II (list entry 1433782) "as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world events on this local community, and the sacrifice it has made in the conflicts of the C20".
