The East India Company Military Seminary was a British military academy at Addiscombe. It opened in 1809 and closed in 1861. Its purpose was to train young officers to serve in the East India Company’s private army in India. 'Ashleigh' and 'India' (the two buildings photographed), were built in 1848 as accommodation for professors at the Seminary. Together with the former gymnasium (now converted to accommodation), these are the only surviving buildings from the military era.
