Possibly Thomas Harrison's magnum opus and "one of the most powerful monuments of Neoclassicism in the whole of England". The complex of civic buildings was erected from 1788 to c1820. Facing is Shire Hall, dominated by its Doric portico (Image]), which is connected via a Doric screen to perpendicular wings, originally housing barracks and the armoury (Image]). The whole scheme is introduced by a Greek Doric gateway or propylaea (Image]). Grade I listed.
