This battlement viewing platform stands more than 200 metres above sea level allowing long views over Blackburn and the West Pennine Moors. The stone barrage formerly hosted two trophy Russian cannons captured during the siege of Sebastopol https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Sevastopol_(1854%E2%80%931855) and presented to the town by Lord Panmure, the Secretary of War, as a reminder of the British victories in the Crimean War https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crimean_War and they were mounted at the top of the park in 1857 on this specially built 'battery'. The cannons have since been removed and, in 2006, the stone battery was developed into ‘Colourfields’, the first in a series of landmarks called 'Panopticons' - a project of the East Lancashire Environmental Arts Network.
