The shaft is one of four along the line of the 3081 metre long Morley railway tunnel, built in 1845-1848. During construction, 23 working shafts were sunk in addition to the four permanent shafts. They are elliptical, rather than circular, in plan. The more recent housing estate has obviously been built around the shaft rather than vice-versa. See Image for another of these shafts, in the town centre, and Image for one adjacent to the M62; the other Image is in open country.
