A quick google revealed this 1904 observation was not made by Mark Twain but by novelist Harry Leon Wilson. Twain was not cited as the source until 1948, by which time Samuel Clemens had been dead for decades. These golfists were practising the Scottish torture at Clacton on Sea Golf Club.
