Harthill, South Yorkshire Wind pumps like the one pictured here were once a common sight in the rural landscape and their function was to pump water from a well to serve the needs of a farm. This one, off Harthill Field Road (near the junction with Serlby Lane and Common Road), is one of three in the area, but is the only one still wholly intact. A second one stands close by the modern-day wind turbines in the middle of Loscar Common, but only the main tower remains, whilst a third at Loscar Farm, close to the junction of Harthill Field Road and Packman Lane, though largely intact, has most of its blades missing.
