The college was founded in 1619 with 12 pupils as The College of God's Gift. The founder was Edward Alleyn, a well known actor and entertainments proprietor of the day. The college now has around 1500 students. A very full history is on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dulwich_College#History
